Chronic vomiting in cats can be frustrating and complicated to treat. As veterinarians, we are often unable to obtain a definitive Western diagnosis despite pursuing appropriate diagnostics. When we do determine the Western diagnosis, in many cases it is an underlying condition that can only be managed rather than cured. The management typically requires oral medications, which are not easy to administer in most felines, especially when they are vomiting, or their appetite is inconsistent. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and acupuncture can help! Using the TCM model we can identify patterns of imbalance that can be addressed using acupuncture techniques. Furthermore, current research supports that specific acupuncture points can modulate the vagus nerve and the autonomic nervous system, providing a way to intervene in the vomiting pathway at the central level and improve overall wellbeing.
