Posture and locomotion are two sides of the same coin; without correct posture, there can be no correct movement.  Standing posture is an emergent property of the complex neuro-musculo-skeletal organization.  But in domestic animals, the consequences of living with humans (selective breeding, nutritional management, limited exercise in urban lifestyles) has systematically altered the structure and function of three essential areas of proprioceptive reporting for posture and movement: the upper cervical region, the ground interface (claws), and the temporomandibular joints dental occlusion.  These distortions of proprioception result in Abnormal Compensatory Posture (ACP), most commonly presented as a canted-in stance.  Chronic use of ACP is the root cause of almost every chronic lameness we treat in dogs.  Restoration of neutral posture is the key to therapeutic interventions that will be effective, fast-working and long-lasting.
