What an animal is fed is the greatest factor in its health and life expectancy with foods playing a major role in the cause and development of disease and behavior disorders. Research demonstrates that for optimum health, cats must be fed meat, lots of meat. Yet, the pet food industry continues to try and make our cats omnivores. Brands once steadfast are increasingly adulterated with plant proteins infused with palatants to convince cats to eat something they would not eat naturally. Dramatic new packaging and misleading labelese cover formula modifications that can lead to changes in the microbiome, alter nutrient absorption, and covertly affect your patient and the effectiveness of treatments. The goal of this presentation is to show the importance of having a clear understanding of a patient’s diet, discuss the cat’s macronutrient profile preferences, review the benefits and challenges of commercial foods, and offer strategies to help caregivers get their felines on the road to better eating habits. Examples will also be presented.
